Auburn University’s Ph.D. in Nutrition program welcomes applicants who are passionate about advancing nutrition science through research and scholarship. Here’s how to get started:

 

Application/Eligibility Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the following courses at the undergraduate level:
    • Two semesters of inorganic/general chemistry (with labs)
    • One semester of organic chemistry (lab not required)
    • One semester of biochemistry
    • One semester of general biology or higher (with lab)
    • General Human Nutrition or higher* (1 semester, lab not required)

* Can be obtained by being a teaching assistant for NTRI 2000: Nutrition in Health

  • Applicants whose native language is not English:
    • TOEFL scores of at least 550 on the written test (213 on the computer-based test)
    • 79 on the Internet Based Test with at least 16 in each section
    • IELTS overall band score of at least 6.5; or
    • Demonstrate English proficiency during an oral examination (interview) satisfactory to the examining committee and approved by the graduate dean.

    • A master’s degree in nutrition or a related field is typically required. However, students with an exceptionally strong academic record may be considered for direct admission into the Ph.D. program from a baccalaureate program.
    • Strong academic record and relevant research experience are recommended.
  2. Prepare Your Materials:
    • Official transcripts from all previous universities
    • Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
    • Statement of purpose outlining your research interests and career goals
    • Letters of recommendation (usually three)
    • English proficiency scores (for international applicants)
  3. Connect with Faculty and Explore Your Research Path:
    • Before selecting your track—Basic Science or Applied Nutrition—prospective students are strongly encouraged to reach out to faculty members in the Department of Nutrition.
    • Connecting with faculty will help you:
      • Learn more about their current research interests and ongoing projects
      • Discuss the availability of graduate assistantships
      • Explore potential research opportunities that align with your interests
    • Building these relationships early can help you identify the best fit for your academic and professional goals and ensure you have the support and mentorship needed for a successful Ph.D. experience.
