Dr. Stephanie Baumann received dual Bachelors Degrees in Political Science and French from Virginia Tech, a Masters in Human Development from Virginia Tech, a Masters in Developmental Psychology from Georgia State University, and a Ph. D. in Developmental Psychology from Georgia State University. Her specialization is in early verbal and nonverbal language development in children with typical and atypical developmental trajectories, such as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as how children with different developmental profiles learn from screen-based media. She also has done work in the evaluation of Disability Leadership Training Programs. Dr. Baumann also worked for several years as a case worker in early intervention with babies and toddlers with disabilities, as well as as a civilian with the U.S. Marine Corps at Marine Corps Base Quantico, working with Marine families who had medical or education support needs. Dr. Baumann is originally from the Washington, D.C. area.

Professional Experience

Dr. Baumann worked for several years as a case worker in early intervention with babies and toddlers with disabilities, serving a rural, low-income area in central Virginia. She then transitioned to a role as a civilian case worker with the U.S. Marine Corps at Marine Corps Base Quantico, working with Marine families who had medical or education support needs and were stationed on the East Coast, in Europe, or in Africa. 

Teaching

Dr. Baumann teaches a variety of courses in the HDFS department, including Lifespan Development, Marriage and Family in a Global Context, The Science of Human Connection, Systems of Care for Individuals with Disabilities across the Lifespan, Family in Cross-Cultural Perspectives, and Parent Education. Dr. Baumann also oversees the HDFS internship.
