Short Bio
Dr. Martin O'Neill serves as Head of the Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management and as the Horst Schulze Endowed Professor of Hospitality Management at Auburn University. As an established expert in hospitality scholarship and administration, he has led the efforts to develop Auburn's hospitality and culinary program(s) located in the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center, which includes a boutique teaching hotel, upscale restaurant, food hall, and other live learning spaces embedded within the curriculum. Dr. O'Neill's research focuses on services marketing and management, service quality, customer relationship management, and the creation of innovative, hands-on experiential learning opportunities that equip students with skills and knowledge to pursue high-level career opportunities globally across the hospitality industry. Dr. O’Neill is especially committed to mentoring students and supporting faculty as they build meaningful careers in hospitality, tourism, and related fields.

Professional Experience
Dr. Martin O’Neill is the Horst Schulze Endowed Professor and Head of Auburn University’s School of Hospitality Management. Martin joined Auburn in 2002 and has taught a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the hospitality field. Prior to becoming Head of School, he served as Department Head for Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality Management for almost 13 years. Prior to which he served as Program Director for Auburn’s Hotel and Restaurant Management program. He has a total of 35 years of service with the academy across three continents. Prior to joining Auburn University Martin was employed by the School of Marketing and Tourism at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia and the School of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland. He holds a BA (Honors) degree in Hotel and Tourism Management, a MS degree in Hotel and Catering Management and a PhD in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the University of Ulster. Martin has served as Vice-President, President and Immediate Past President of the International Council on Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Education - the peak professional body for hospitality educators. Martin has also previously served as President of the Southeast, Central & South American CHRIE Federation.
Innovation
His primary research thrust relates to the concept of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and its application within the broad services field encompassing both public and private sector organizations in the tourism, hospitality and restaurant management fields. His research niche is in the area of disconfirmation modeling as a tool for garnering customer feedback and continual system improvement. He has published widely in the tourism, hospitality and broader service fields and his work has found a home in many of the top ranked journals including the Cornell Quarterly, The Journal of Travel and Tourism Research, The Journal of Vacation Marketing, The International Journal of Hospitality Management, the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, The Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism, The International Journal of Hospitality Administration, The Journal of Services Marketing, The Services Industries Journal and The British Food Journal.
