Dietetic Internship Overview

The M.S. in Nutrition Non-Thesis with Dietetic Internship offers a minimum of 1200 hours of supervised field experience in conjunction with the M.S. degree to enable baccalaureate degree graduates of Didactic Programs in Dietetics (DPDs) the opportunity to fulfill the experiential requirements to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians. Students complete 9-credit hours of field experience taking NTRI 7010 Advanced Practicum in Dietetics as the elective courses for the M.S. Non-Thesis. Academic coursework is completed over the first year, followed by the field experience. Academic coursework may be completed on campus or by distance learning. Supervised practice may be completed locally (on-campus track) or remotely (distance/remote track). Technology requirements for distance learning or remote rotations are minimal. Most current PC/Mac or laptop models will meet basic minimum hardware requirements with little or no configuration upgrades. Newer versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Microsoft Office Professional (for PC or for Mac), and antivirus software will be required. There is a tuition differential for distance learning for all credit hours except for the supervised practice hours in NTRI 7010 Advanced Practicum in Dietetics, per Auburn University policy.

Supervised practice will occur in various settings, including acute and critical care, outpatient, long-term care, wellness, public health, community, school food service, and other profession settings.

Supervised practice completed for the on campus track will take place in Alabama and Georgia (within an approximate 90 mile radius). Students completing supervised practice remotely will be responsible for identifying all of their own field sites and preceptors; they will work with the Program Director and/or Program Coordinator to verify acceptable facility arrangements, establish affiliation agreements, and ensure requirements are met. Field sites can be determined following admittance to the program, during the first year of coursework preceding supervised practice. Once rotation sites have been determined and preceptors approved by the Program Director and/or Program Coordinator based on established criteria, the Program Director and/or Program Coordinator will send a standard affiliation agreement template to the preceptor for approval by the facility. If there are issues with the agreement, the Program Director and/or Program Coordinator will communicate with the facility to attempt to work out the agreement to the satisfaction of both entities. If an agreement is not reached, the intern will need to identify an alternate site for that rotation, since there must be a signed affiliation agreement on site prior to any field work is initiated, except in rotations completed directly through Auburn University.

Learning days for on-campus and distance/remote students are the same for the supervised practice component of the MS Nutrition Non-Thesis with Dietetic Internship. Coursework for the MS is completed in the classroom for on-campus students and online for distance students. Distance students complete identical curriculum as on-campus students.
