Project Uplift is an agency whose main goal is to help children develop constructive, happy lives so that the delinquency rate in our county will decrease.
Project Uplift is governed by the Lee County Youth Development Center's Board of Directors, administrator of a local ad valorem tax, our primary funding source. Additional major support comes from the Cities of Opelika and Auburn, the United Way of Lee County, and several voluntary contributions. The Department of Human Development and Family Studies, in the College of Human Sciences at Auburn University, provides in-kind services and office space to the volunteer program.
Project Uplift offers volunteer services to Lee County children at no cost to their families. Since our opening in July 1973, almost 9,500 volunteers and children have participated in our program (presently we have almost 350 people in the program). Only a small percentage of the children have entered the juvenile court system during the time that they were involved with the program.
