The roots of the Drummond family legacy can be traced back to 1935 when H.E. Drummond secured a $300 loan from the local bank in Walker County, Alabama to begin a coal mining operation on land inherited from his mother. From its modest beginnings as a local supplier of coal in Northwest Alabama, the family-owned Drummond Company has grown into a multi-billion dollar private corporation based in Birmingham, Alabama that is a global leader in the production of coal and coal based derivatives, as well as oil and real estate. The company’s tremendous financial success has allowed the descendants of H.E. and Elza to give back in ways that are profoundly improving the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities stretching all the way from Walker County and the state of Alabama to Columbia, South America and beyond. Beth Thorne Stukes, granddaughter of H.E. and Elza and daughter of CHS alumna Barbara Drummond Thorne, will accept the award on behalf of the Drummond family.
