Pre‑Interior Design (INDX)
Your Pathway into the Interior Design Major
The Pre‑Interior Design (INDX) major is the first step for students who have been admitted to Auburn University and are pursuing a degree in Interior Design but have not yet been formally admitted to the professional program.
During your first year, you’ll build foundational skills and explore the discipline through core courses, including CADS 1000 and CADS 1100.
Portfolio Review & Admission to the Professional Program
At the end of the first full academic year, student work from CADS 1000 and CADS 1100 is reviewed through a portfolio evaluation process. Based on this review, approximately 55–60 students are admitted into the Interior Design (INDS) program to continue into the sophomore, junior, and senior years.
Students who are not selected for admission receive individualized advising and guidance on alternative academic pathways that align with their interests and goals.
Transfer Students
Transfer students—both internal and external—who are in good academic standing are typically placed in Pre‑Interior Design (INDX) until they complete CADS 1000 and CADS 1100 and participate in the portfolio review process.
Students with prior design‑related coursework from Auburn or another institution may request direct consideration for entry into the Interior Design (INDS) program, pending evaluation of transfer credits and academic work.

Why This Pathway Works
This structured entry process ensures that all students:
- Build a strong design foundation
- Are prepared for the rigor of the professional program
- Receive clear feedback and advising at each step
Our goal is to support student success—whether that path leads into Interior Design or another related field.
