Bachelor of Science in Nutrition: Nutrition Science Option

Mission:

The mission of the Nutrition Science major at Auburn University is to provide a high quality program of study that integrates the core nutrition science courses with additional courses in chemistry, physics, and biology to prepare graduates for entry into professional/graduate schools or nutrition-related careers dedicated to enhancing human well-being and quality of life.

Program Objective:

The NSPM curriculum will:

  1. Produce graduates that are competitive for acceptance into postgraduate academic programs.
  2. Produce graduates with a sound scientific understanding of complex nutrition issues related to health and disease.
  3. Produce graduates committed to the enhancement of human well-being and quality of life.

Student Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the NSPM curriculum, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of digestion/absorption and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the utilization of vitamins and minerals.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of diseases on nutrient utilization and needs.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of nutrient requirements and optimal nutrition in the prevention of chronic diseases.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of nutrient-nutrient (including nutritional toxicities) and nutrient-gene interactions on human health.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of nutritional needs across the lifespan.
  7. Demonstrate effective and professional oral and written communication related to nutrition science.
