Lifetime Achievement Award

2014

The Honorable Spencer Bachus

U.S. Congressman Alabama's 6th District

The College of Human Sciences is also privileged to honor Alabama Congressman Spencer Bachus with the IQLA Lifetime Achievement Award. An Auburn alumnus and dean of the Alabama Congressional delegation, Bachus was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992. He will be retiring at the end of his current term in January after 22 years of loyal service to the 6th Congressional District and to the State. One of his proudest and most notable achievements was the successful bi-partisan effort he led in 2000 to provide debt relief to many of the world’ poorest countries, thereby reducing hunger and poverty and allowing more than 51 million children to attend school. During his tenure, Bachus has served on the Transportation and Infrastructure, Judiciary, and Financial Services Committees, assuming the role of Ranking Member and Chairman of Financial Services from 2007-2012. Included among his many honors are the Watchdog of the U.S. Treasury Award; Coalition to Save Medicare Award; Spirit of Free Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and the Houghton-Lewis Leadership Award for racial understanding and reconciliation from the Faith and Politics Institute.
