As a scholar, I am interested in many areas of Public Health. The American Public Health Association defines public health as the engagement of groups of people to prevent disease and promote health. My interest is focused on the overall health of the individual and the family unit. When conducting research and promoting outreach efforts, I have focused on family dynamics and the influence on health outcomes. My current applied research uses the PROSPER model to engage the local schools, the university, and the community to engage in positive societal change. This is a community driven approach to improve the individual and the family. When addressing the overall family unit with a focus on health, some of the major challenges are health literacy, access to health, and awareness of services. In seeking societal changes, it is key to bridge academia and the community.
