Summary
Dr. Karla Teel’s academic interests include technical design, apparel CAD, and apparel production management. For her research interest, Dr. Teel is considered an expert in the field of 3D body scanning technology where her research has been presented internationally in England, Korea, Egypt, Australia, and Hong Kong. Recent research projects include scale development for tween girls and boys with reference to BMI and puberty in 3D, the Freshman 15 (a longitudinal study of body weight and shape patterns in college students using 3D body scanning), classification and fit preference of men’s body shapes, technical aspects of the different 3D body scanners on the market, body image and body size of tween girls and boys and using avatars with 4th & 5th grade children to see the influence on obesity. Prior to joining Auburn in 2005, Dr. Teel worked for two land grant institutions of North Carolina State and University of Missouri. She has co-authored 35 works with 27 of them being peer reviewed, had 76 conference presentations and 13 invited presentations nationally and internationally. She has also received over $1.5 million in grants for teaching and research.
